An interactive day for elementary school principals from NAEYC and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP)
Tuesday, November 4
8:30 a.m. - 4:00  p.m.

All young children deserve access to high-quality preschool, kindergarten, and primary education. Our nation's first national education goal is for all young children to start school ready to learn, and research shows that the early years of school set the stage for higher achievement for all children. Public schools across the country are addressing these issues by offering pre-kindergarten and focusing even greater attention on their kindergarten to third-grade programs.

You may be one of many elementary school principals who are implementing programs for 4-year-olds in their schools, as well as modifying kindergarten through third-grade curricula and teaching practices. How can you ensure that your pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first- through third-grade programs are high quality, developmentally appropriate, and intellectually challenging? Where can you learn about innovative strategies for addressing the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical needs of young children?

To help you address these and other questions regarding early childhood education, NAEYC and NAESP are sponsoring a special day-long workshop. A group of national experts with extensive experience mentoring and supporting elementary principals will guide the series of presentations and discussions. Their combined expertise will give you the tools to develop, implement and sustain high-quality, intellectually challenging, and innovative programs in your school.

The day will include small group discussions that give participants time to reflect, network, and dialogue with one another about practical applications of these ideas. This dynamic, interactive session will feature discussions with early childhood principals and other leaders, an overview of the revised NAESP Early Childhood Standards, lessons from the field, and group problem-solving. Participants will receive a resource notebook and earn six NAESP Leadership Academy professional development units (PDUs).

Registration-$195 for NAEYC and NAESP members; $275 for nonmembers. Includes materials, continental breakfast, lunch, and light refreshments.

NCATE Accreditation: An NAEYC workshop for faculty compiling new or revised program reports
Tuesday, November 4
8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Are you preparing an NCATE report?  Come to this full-day workshop to learn everything you need to know to put together a successful and meaningful report.  A team of NAEYC staff and experienced program reviewers, auditors, and BOE members will facilitate this interactive workshop.

NAEYC's standards and NCATE's accreditation process for early childhood professional preparation set expectations and a vision for the field, supporting quality and recognition of quality of higher education early childhood programs. If done well, the report and review process allows programs to engage in meaningful self-study so faculty can truly improve students’ knowledge and skills—and receive recognition for a job well done.

Learn about designing assessments that align with the NAEYC standards, see what an effective rubric looks like, and discover how to present persuasive data. Learn about the steps involved in going through the program review process—and improving your program; the five sections of the program report; the six to eight required assessments; and how best to communicate your program’s unique context.  Meet colleagues who are also engaged in the program review process and foster supportive professional relationships.  Return to your institution with a notebook that includes program report templates, NAEYC and NCATE standards, sample report sections, planning tools, and other practical resources.

Developmental Screening and Classroom-based Assessment of Preschoolers: An Introductory Training Program
Tuesday, November 4
8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

This full-day session is a Training-of-Trainers (TOT) program for administrators of programs serving preschool (3- to 5-year-old) children—community-based program directors and elementary school principals. Participants in this TOT session will then conduct NAEYC’s new training program on developmental screening and classroom-based assessment for their program’s teaching teams.

Developmental Screening and Classroom-based Assessment of Preschoolers: An Introductory Training Program is a series of workshops designed as basic trainingfor teaching staff in center- and school-based programs for preschool children. NAEYC designed this program to meet several goals:

The primary training approach is a workshop format (face-to-face training). The program consists of six modules, augmented by self-study and hands-on experiences with the children in the participants’ groups and their families. Each module can be conducted as a 1½–2 hour session or modules can be combined for longer sessions.

Participants in this TOT will receive the NAEYC publication Basics of Assessment and a Trainer’s Manual that includes information for conducting the six sessions—the Timeframe for conducting each session, expected outcomes for participants, materials needed to conduct each session, prior-to-session directions, and trainer’s notes. Training materials also include a DVD with video clips used in several sessions and a CD with PowerPoint slides and PDFs of training “props.” Participants also will receive an Assessment Poster and electronic versions of the teaching staff’s Participant Notebook (handouts and other resources).

Registration—$325 for members, $350 for nonmembers. Includes materials, continental breakfast, and light refreshments.
